Preconception and planning

A lot goes into trying to fall pregnant and you might wonder what you can do to prepare. To increase your chances of pregnancy our preconception appointments focus on aligning factors in your life, taking into account medical history, recent health tests, stressors and lifestyle.

Care from the get-go

As soon as you discover you’re pregnant, you’ll want to start planning. Unlike other practices, we book your first appointment early at 7 - 10 weeks (even sooner if you request it). We know those first few weeks bring up questions about what to expect and when to expect it, so we help ease your mind and educate you from the get-go.

What you can expect

To ensure everything is on track, a series of appointments and tests are put into place at key dates through your pregnancy. These give us an understanding of how your pregnancy and your baby’s growth is progressing. These are also appointments we recommend your partner or support person attend.

Key appointments

After your initial 7 - 10 week appointment we see you at:

13 weeks

  • To review how your baby’s chromosomes are forming

20 weeks

  • To look at your baby’s secondary anatomy

28 weeks

  • To perform glucose and diabetes tests and administer prenatal vaccines

36 weeks

  • To monitor growth and well-being of baby

Other appointments

As well as these key appointments, we see you more frequently the closer you are to your delivery date. We see you:

  • Every 4-6 weeks: From your first visit to 30 weeks
  • Every 2-3 weeks: From 31 weeks to 36 weeks
  • Weekly: From 36 weeks until you deliver.

We are also available for further appointments at your request.

Investigations

We organise all investigations to ensure a healthy pregnancy. This includes:

  • Preconception carrier screening (if required/requested)
  • Genetic screening (NIPT or FTS)
  • Booking blood work
  • All ultrasound investigations (dating; early anomaly; and anatomy scans; growth and well being assessment)
  • Gestational Diabetes / Iron stores / Blood grouping and antibody testing (Anti-D if required)
  • Vaccinations

Throughout these appointments we discuss birth plans, addressing safe delivery options and the ways your body may respond. This is when it’s important to stay open minded. Because everyone’s delivery experience is different, having a ‘Plan A’ as well as ‘Plan B’ and ‘C’ will help your baby have the best start in life.

FAQs

When should I book my first antenatal appointment?

Usually your first appointment falls between 7-10 weeks. Because we take a proactive approach, we actively book and prepare all your investigations and, if you like, we can even see you at any time. If you discover you’re pregnant earlier than expected, do not hesitate to call us at any time to book an appointment to discuss any questions or concerns.

Do I need a referral?

Yes, it is essential you obtain a referral from your GP before attending your first appointment. This referral lasts for the entire pregnancy.

How should I prepare for my first visit?

Once you’ve organised your referral and booked your appointment, there is very little you need to do prior to coming in. At the time of booking, our practice manager, Tania, will send some brief forms for you to complete. Please bring to your appointment:

  • The referral from your GP and the completed documentation sent to you
  • A list of any medications you are taking and any drug allergies you may have
  • Any ultrasounds or test results from your referring doctor (often this will include a set of antenatal bloods and a dating ultrasound)
  • Operation reports from any recent surgeries.

Who else is involved in the process/support in the process?

Throughout your pregnancy, you will be in close contact with our practice manager, Tania, and our friendly team of midwives.

How often will I see you during my pregnancy?

On average, we see most patients between 10-12 times. That being said, it's important to us that you feel comfortable and supported throughout your pregnancy (and beyond), as such, you can call when you feel you need to and discuss booking additional appointments when needed.

What happens if I need help outside of hours?

You’re free to contact us at any time for any concerns that might arise. Normal practice hours are Monday-Thursday, 8:00-5:00pm and Friday 8:00-12:00pm and we will provide you with after-hours support numbers.

How will we support you throughout your pregnancy?

Have you heard the saying that it takes a village to raise a child? Well we believe your pregnancy shouldn't be any different. We are here to support you throughout your entire pregnancy and beyond, which is why it's so important to us that you are able to book in or call as often as you’d like.

We like to consider ourselves your Pregnancy Personal Assistants. Life can be stressful enough so we aim to take the worry away and help organise everything for you so you can step back to focus on you and your baby.

Who should come to appointments with you?

You’re welcome to bring a support person to as many appointments as you’d like. It’s common for people to bring along a partner to key dates. We recommend your partner or support person attends the initial consult, major scans and the appointments closest to your due date.

Can you help with high risk pregnancies?

Yes. We have had extensive experience with high risk pregnancy types. We invite you to call or book an appointment with us to discuss your needs further.
